Boulder's district attorney apologized to the Ramsey family today, saying new DNA evidence convinces her that no member of the family is under suspicion for the 1996 death of 6-year-old JonBenet.Shit, now tomorrow I'll have to get up early and listen to the unbearable Denver radio yakker Peter Boyles, who was relentless in his persecution of the Ramseys, to see if he apologizes too. My guess: no.
In a letter to John Ramsey, DA Mary Lacy said her office recently got results back on a new "touch DNA" process in which technicians can scrape places where there are no stains or other signs that DNA may be present.
The samples from JonBenet's long-johns — "probably handled by the perpetrator during the course of this crime" — revealed male DNA, but none of it matched anyone in the Ramsey family, she said.
"To the extent that we may have contributed in any way to the public perception that you might have been involved in the crime, I am deeply sorry," Lacy wrote.
"No innocent person should have to endure such an extensive trial in the court of public opinion."
She added: "I am very comfortable that our conclusion that this evidence has vindicated your family is based firmly on all the evidence."
Update: 9News has buckets of stuff.
Update II: Already, questions about Boulder DA Mary Lacy's motivation for unequivocally clearing the Ramseys. Remember, she's the schmuck who headed up the John Mark Karr fiasco. Carol McKinley, a KOA reporter who covered the case, is having none of the supposed exoneration. Paraphrasing: "What about all the other evidence? What about the fibers from Patsey's jacket that were found in the garrotte and the duct tape?
Update III: Dan Caplis on KHOW: Mary Lacy is untrustworthy, she talks out of both sides of her mouth . . . Damn, everybody's badmouthing her. Now they've got Petey B! Good, now I won't have to get up early.
Boulder is Chinatown, Petey says.
Update: The Post's David Harsanyi is also unlaudatory of DA Lacy.
